Mojeek is a privacy-friendly English search engine. Unlike DuckDuckGo, Mojeek has its own index.
Unfortunately, the UK has a terrible track record with privacy. I guess the architecture has to be good
I don’t know why anyone looking for privacy would use a search engine based in the 5 eyes countries. Terrible idea
Surprisingly Switzerland doesn’t appear in many of these organizations, but France does…
yep
Qwant is French and indexes their own stuff, with a small portion pulled from Bing. It is my preferred choice and daily driver. On utmost rare occasions, once a month, I might use Startpage for Google results.
Start relying less on search engines, and try to bookmark your favourite sites so that you rely less on search engines in the first place. Minimises tracking on you.
Here is something nice you all can refer to: https://digdeeper.neocities.org/ghost/search.html#summary
I don’t really like the relation between Qwant and Microsoft. (I personally use SearX)
The problem is, Bing and Google are kings of web crawling and aggregation of search results. And a third party can never match upto them due to lack of monetary capital and infrastructure. Therefore one has to rely on their results, whilst minimising tracking on you.
I research a lot, and that is how I get things done without using Google dot com or Bing dot com.
StartPage is owned by a US data mining company. They tried to hide the acquisition. I’d stay away from that one.
The data points on me are minimal, and I rarely if ever use it. I have already achieved negligible usage.
I hate using it, as

What I like the most about DDG is the bangs. Is there any other search engine with something similar?
Thank you! Ecosia seems to have only very few and most of those I don’t need. Qwant seems to have a lot more, but is still missing those I use most often with DDG, for example Python library documentation like !numpy or !mpl.
Regarding Qwant, you can suggest them to add it, there’s a link to a form on the page.
Cool, I’ll do that and play a bit around with Qwant. Maybe, I change defaults then. :)
Short update: I switched to Qwant. Great website! Thank you very much!
Cool. There’s also lite.qwant.com if you’re out and about on your phone and low on data, or just want a faster experience. You’re welcome.
Neat, thanks! :)
also DuckDuckgo has the best IU imo, better than any other search engine I’ve used.
Check out metager.org
metaGer looks cool, but does it really support something similar to DDG’s bangs? I don’t find anything about that.
I like the ddg bangs too but I’m weaning myself off them, instead using keywords in Firefox. It’s really easy: just right-click (ctrl-click on Mac?) on a search field then select “Add keyword for this search”.
Especially since they started removing (censoring…?) bangs for the likes of Sci-Hub and torrent sites, and since I got thinking that perhaps they don’t need to know a history of all my searches on all the websites.

The thing is that I use that bangs not only on my laptop but also on my phone with KISS launcher.
So, reading up on it at duckduckgo I see that they have their own crawler and also incorporate other search results
we also source from multiple partners, though most commonly from Bing (and none from Google).
And regarding privacy:
As per our strict privacy policy, we never share any personal information with any of our partners. The way it works is when we call a partner for information, it is proxied through our servers so it stays completely anonymous.
