I assume this is mastodon.social. Small compared to twitter, but it’s progress.

While I am happy about all the publicity federation is getting, it seems this is also the time to reduce over-reliance on one instance (mastodon.social, for example) as it will bring a hangover of the bird-site. Technical federation is one step. Social communities to nurture these instances is a more tasking ask, but far more stronger in fighting against monopoly.

Compleatly agree, also peaplf need to start realizing that the Fediverse is not only mastodon and mastodon social. The cool part of it it’s its interoperability between different services.

Noob question: What does this interoperability look like in practice? Because I haven’t been able to use my Lemmy account in a Mastodon client.

I’m not an expert on either lemmy or mastodon, but federation and interoperability doesn’t mean you can use on account on another client. You need an account on every instance that you want to be active on. However, the federation part of fedi means that you don’t have to have an account on instances of the same software (mastodon users can talk to and interact with each other all they want regardless of which instance they’re on) and interoperability means that different servers can sometimes do the same thing with some caveats.

Microblogging servers for instance can all pretty much be interoperable if they adhere to a common way of structuring data. For them it doesnt matter if you’re on Mastodon or some other server, a post is a post. Peertube or pixelfed which has focuses on other data types (video and images respectively) will be slightly less interoperable, but for instance peertube treats followers from mastodon as subscribers (might have my terminology wrong, they might just call channel subs followers) and videos, comments and likes in peertube would become posts, comments and favorites when interacted with from a mastodon account / server

Lemmy is a bit of a different beast because it’s data structures is so different, but presumably up votes would be interpreted as favorites in mastodon, a post is a post with a link at the bottom and threads in mastodon on a lemmy post might even become comment chains when viewed from lemmy, not sure. Someone else can fill in if they know how this works.

I wonder if there are any in-person communities that support an instance, and how that fares, compared to loose online connection that is here today, gone tomorrow.

I wish something similar like what happened to Twitter happens to Reddit. Would be a big day for Lemmy and the revolution for sure!

I think that whole Fediverse gained, not only Mastodon. Besides all shitty things happening, I’m delighted by recent Fediverse gain and it makes me positive for the future of this world.

The norwegian mastodon instance https://snabelen.no has also increased it’s userbase dramatically. From having 100 active users to 250 active users. I don’t know how many new accounts has been created. I have also seen a new norwegian instance being created with 6 registered users.

I started to use Mastodon recently. I’m sorry if I sound grumpy, but… that’s a hell of an awful user interface. Basic features seem to be missing. I wanted to collect some topics I’m interested in… and you can’t do that. You have to type in the hashtag of your interest every single time. You can’t mix multiple hashtags for an overview. Simply put: You can’t follow hashtags. That’s a feature that is discussion since more than 5 years. I honestly don’t get it.

Of course you can pin and follow hastags in Mastodon.

      1. Search for a hashtag (e.g. #web in the search bar).
      2. Click on the hashtag (#web here, as an example).
      3. You will see a column #web open in the web interface at the far end.
      4. You can pin this hashtag column by clicking on the three settings leavers at the top of the hashtag column, then selecting Pin.

Thanks for the reply. I knew about that workaround. That’s only works with the “advanced view”, and the user interface for combining hashtags is atrocious. You always have to have one permanent column for that, so you maybe can make a few of them before your screen is overloaded horizontally.

It kinda works, but it’s not a good solution.

It may be worth thinking about how/where could this be implemented in the simple interface… as a future improvement.

try misskey. its antennas feature might be what you need. it’s basically a way to create a custom timeline from specific users and/or with specific keywords, which can be hashtags

I have a couple of hashtags pinned in a column (desktop browser), so can see any of those topics as they are posted. For me this is actually better than Twitter has?

Well not “problematic” as it actually works great, and I’ve never had to touch it. But yes, I’m not sure all the mobile app clients have implemented this option, which is why I mainly use the desktop browser. Having such a “watchlist” is essential for me for monitoring topics of interest. I prefer to follow topics, than profiles.

If these numbers are coming from more than mastodon.social, I’d be very interested in hearing about how exactly they gathered that data

Partly cause people expect an exact Twitter which mastodon doesn’t really aim to be. Some people will enjoy the organic growth of connections others won’t. Plus lack of feature parity with twitter and the complications of a federated timeline and a local timeline. People in general dont have the patience to try and learn something new.
