Pretty much exactly what I expected and hoped for. Really nice :)
Steam Deck starts at $399
OK FUCK, IT’S HAPPENING
SteamOS 3.0 is also being based upon Arch Linux
OK HOLY SHIT THIS IS HAPPENING
It’s a custom APU they partnered with AMD on for Zen 2 + RDNA 2

EAC and BattleEye will be Proton compatible before this is launched.
It. Is. Happening
THE SUDDEN REALIZATION THIS POSSIBLY MEANS PROTON ANTICHEAT SUPPORT BEFORE DECEMBER
orgasms harder
I will completely ditch windows if this happens.
Do you have a link for that info? I know they’ve been working on it but I haven’t seen news in a while.
They mentioned this in the announcement of the Steam Deck.
They mention it in the dev video. Not sure if they say here that they plan on having it ready before it hits the market in December. If not in that video, there is a video out there with a steam official saying exactly that (maybe the q&a or the Gabe video?)
The dock is the cherry on top, you can actually use the thing as an actual workstation too!
It really has everything going for it. Already have a big Steam library? The you already own a shitton of games for this.
IMHO only negative point I can see right now is that it seems a bit too big.
Yeah, but then again I really, really like devices as big as my pockets can fit. And this seems perfect.
Arch Linux + KDE is an interesting choice. I dont care about the console itself, but it should result in a lot of improvements upstreamed for use by Pinephone and even desktop users.
It already has a lot. For example some developers working open source AMD drivers are paid by Valve for years already.
This is going to be GOOD for Linux and consoles.
MASSIVE GRIN ON FACE MOMENT
That looks really nice, and with the option of a dock that makes it a good replacement for a gaming laptop.
No keyboard, but I am also thinking this might make for a nice work-desk PC with an external screen, mouse and keyboard. The performance is definitely sufficient. I hope the cooling isn’t too loud in idle mode.
Oh, I want three of these so badly now (my child’s laptop is dead and they kept stealing my computer to play steam games).
Wow, this looks really slick. Switching to Arch as the base for SteamOS was a bold move. Curious to see how the console will turn out next year.
Gives them by far the better GPU driver support. I guess it will be similar to Manjaro, which works great for gaming.
I am wondering how long the battery life would be on it and how it would handle kernel level anticheat software.
They answered the first in an FAQ… depending on what you play 2-6 hours. They mentioned that at least in Portal2 you can limit the frame-rate to 30 fps to increase battery-life.
As for the second part, well lets see. Valve seems confident to at least get some of them working. I think the worst offenders of such malware are anyways not on the Steam store.
I’m really excited about this. My computing setup at home is an old optiplex that I turned into a lightweight homeserver, a T430 running Arch I use for computing, TV with built in Roku, and a couple old handhelds for gaming (my preferred way to play games). I’ve been looking for an upgrade to most of these and considering getting a 7" tablet to install linux on.
So, this meets pretty much all of my criteria. I plan on using this as my daily driver desktop with a dock, a second dock connected to my TV for Kodi and media watching, handheld mode for gaming, SD cards with alternate boot for emulation station, toss it in my purse and have a touchscreen linux tablet, etc. All for <$800 (factoring in USB-C docks I’ll need to get).
I can see that this isn’t for everyone, and I’m not the intended audience, but it hits so many points for me even if it only halfway lives up to the hype. There are a few downsides: only supports one external monitor at a time, I’m a little concerned about heating (noise and throttling), using it as a laptop with a small external keyboard in a coffee shop will be a bit odd (I don’t do this much though), and upgrade-ability is not really present. Still, I’m super stoked and think it’s worth the money for me.
can you install steam OS in a VM?
It is just a normal Linux distribution, so probably yes. But GPU passthrough in VMs is tricky to do AFAIK.
Interesting to see they advertising this with Jedi Fallen Order, Valve really has faith in Proton and I love it.
All I wanted was root access and now there’s this. Never have I ever been this unbealivibly moist.
