It should be an app like Spotify Not including combinations like: Newpipe + VLC because I want recommendations on what I should try within the app, and offline downloading. I like the idea of using a front-end for the other service if no Foss option exists. Any opinions?

Seconded. The app has a radio suggestion feature and a quick picks that recommends music based on your most listened to songs. It’s a yt music front-end with no ads and no tracking.

You can find it on f-droid and github.

There is likely a way to stream local (public) radio stations using a browser, granted one likes the music of at least one station that does so. I find this provides excellent recommendations and tons of helpful information about the picks for the playlist, which itself is typically logged by time.

This provides no built-in download option, though if great recommendations are the focus, nothing beats public radio.

    The old reliable:

    1. Torrent or otherwise pirate mp3s

    2. Play using open source media player

I’ve honestly not found a better option, at least for my preferences.

The best would be to just torrent music on-demand, then use any music player app you like.

If you want a large library, you could run a music server like navidrome, then get the app DSub to connect to it.

Not including combinations like: Newpipe + VLC

    Straight up NewPipe then?

No seriously, it has literally everything you’re asking for. Access to a ton of songs, podcasts, and more, and integrated player that works in the background, downloading to mp3 and opus files offline, recommendations in the form of related videos, open source frontend.

I’ve been using a P2P sharing application called Nicotine+, and it’s been working wonders for me so far in terms of music.
